Let's talk about you

You've led engineering teams before, and you've done it without losing touch with the code. You know when to zoom out and set direction, and when to zoom in and get your hands dirty. Technical credibility isn't something you claim, it's something your team feels.

You think clearly and communicate with confidence, translating complex technical trade-offs into decisions that the whole organisation can get behind. You enjoy working across functions: with product, with the CTO, with the Team Leads who look to you for guidance when the path isn't obvious.

And you're not just maintaining what exists. You're energised by new tech and the challenge of taking a platform to the next level, in reliability, scalability, and the speed at which a team can ship.

Your responsibilities

Reporting directly to the CTO, you'll be a key partner in shaping where our technical platform goes next. At Hakio, you'll be motivated by responsibility to:

• Lead and develop our engineering team leads, giving them the clarity and support to do their best work
• Work closely with the CTO to define and execute the next phase of our technical platform
• Own the technical roadmap and ensure it aligns with priorities coming from the product org
• Actively drive AI adoption across the engineering organisation — identifying where AI tooling can accelerate delivery, improve quality, and raise the bar for how we work
• Set and uphold engineering standards around code quality, reliability, and system design
• Be an active participant in technical discussions — reviewing architecture, challenging assumptions, and occasionally writing code
• Run 1:1’s with Team Leads, supporting their professional development as they become excellent leaders, not managers. 
• Hire and onboard engineers as the team grows
• Make the hard calls on prioritisation, technical debt, and build vs. buy

You'll thrive here if you have

• Proven experience leading engineering teams in a product-driven environment
• Deep technical credibility. You know our stack, you've built things yourself, and engineers respect your input
• Hands-on experience with AI tooling and a clear point of view on how to embed it meaningfully into engineering workflows
• Experience driving platform evolution, not just keeping the lights on
• Strong communication skills across product and business stakeholders
• Experience managing team leads or senior engineers, not just individual contributors
• Comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to bring structure without bureaucracy
