What is machine learning?

Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that involves the development of algorithms and models that enable computers to learn and improve from experience instead of being explicitly programmed to perform a specific task.

The fundamental idea behind machine learning is to allow computers to automatically find patterns, make predictions, or solve complex problems without being explicitly programmed for each possible scenario.

Some of the popular main model types of machine learning are supervised learning, unsupervised learning and reinforcement learning.

Machine learning in practice

In practice, machine learning creates value when it turns complex data into better decisions. That’s exactly how Hakios forecasting software applies it: The Fashion Planning Module uses ML to forecast demand and shape assortments and channel strategies. And with the Sales & Operations Module, machine learning models keep core products available in real time - balancing never-out-of-stock goals with lean inventory.
